Nations of Origin underway for 2025

The PCYC Nations of Origin Rugby League tournament will kick off in western Sydney today with 21 First Nations represented in the Under 16 male and female teams.

The tournament was the brainchild of respected NSWRL official, the late Steve ‘Bear’ Hall, and emerged after state-wide community consultations held during Reconciliation Week in 2012.

The event has grown since then to encompass other sports including basketball, netball and gymnastics, with more than 1000 young people, 188 teams and 24 First Nations communities taking part.

The Rugby League component will be played over the next two days (Tuesday 15-Wednesday 16) at Whalan Reserve in Whalan.

“I am proud of NSWRL’s association with the PCYC Nations of Origin for many reasons including the involvement of the late Steve ‘Bear’ Hall,” NSWRL Chief Executive David Trodden said.

“’Bear’ was responsible for coming up with the idea of a reconciliation-type sporting event that would provide First Nations youths with a chance to represent their nation.

“The event has grown significantly every year since it first started in 2012, and I wish good luck to all the teams and participants over the next two days.”

Teams consist of a 70-30 split of First Nations and non-First Nations youth and are endorsed by local Elders. To take part, young people must maintain a school attendance rate of more than 80 per cent and have no negative interactions with police.

“As the competition follows the celebration of NAIDOC Week, it is especially significant to honour the history, culture, and achievements of young people, continuing our reconciliation journey that will benefit the rising generation,” PCYC NSW CEO Ben Hobby said.
